We, the people and Old Colony press : business records, 1830-1836.

This collection consists of letters from a variety of people concerning the establishment of the "free press" in Plymouth. The bulk of the collection deals with the two years prior to its inception and includes lists of shareholders and their investments, proposals for its organization and publication, circulars for subscriptions, and a booklet of subscribers and their addresses. Also included are letters concerning the hiring of a managing editor. The later papers concern problems of the paper and contain a number of receipts for equipment and supplies to operate the paper. There are also two letters of James A. Shedd ( - ) to his uncle, Ebenezer Adams (1765-1841), recounting Shedd's role in the abduction and murder of William Morgan (1774-1826). Although Shedd was alleged not to be directly involved, his account is extremely detailed and discusses not only the facts surrounding the case, but also attempts an explanation of the motives behind the episode. Shedd, a Mason from Ft. Niagara, New York, later fled to Ohio, where he attempted to expose what he believed were excesses of Masons.
